This is the first of an unfortunate, and sadly unending list of memorials I will be posting in honor of our beloved dogs who have passed over rainbow bridge. I've lost so many over the years, and always envision them finding one another in "doggy heaven", instantly acknowledging one another as my pets, and becoming fast friends... running happy and free... as gleefully as the dogs I've observed in Central Park.

In Nikki's words, "My sister insisted I meet an angelic 80-lb. red chow rescue in Baltimore. (I wanted a German Shepherd.) She had been living on the streets for almost a year, and had given birth to a litter of pups (all placed). No more gentle animal could be imagined. My then 12-year-old son and I fell in love with her immediately. We drove her back to New York during a hurricane---storm and blinding rain outside; all peace, warmth, and safety inside the car. She seemed to know that she would now be protected and loved forevermore.
For the next twelve years, Chi, the magnificent lion-dog, graced our lives. She was a neighborhood icon, and brought smiles to all who were lucky enough to see her. Her calm demeanor actually convinced a dog-terrified friend that hugging Chi's neck was a safe thing to do. Chi never met a dog (or pet hedgehog) she didn't like. Unheard of for a chow, Chi was a pet therapy dog with handicapped children.
Her legacy is one of joy, peace, and so much love. She is heart-wrenchingly missed, and lovingly remembered."
So lovingly said Nikki, and she will indeed be remembered.
We knew Chi from the first days she came to the park, and were fast friends with her and her wonderful family. Our chows Osita and Xie Xie loved romping with their friend Chi, and we think they probably still do!
